James G. Olle was born in Portsmouth and attended the Southern Secondary School. He began work in Portsmouth Central Library at the age of sixteen and remained there, apart from wartime service overseas in the Pay Corps and Education Corps (1940-46), until 1951, when he became Chief Reference Librarian at Sheffield.
